Main Post:

Hello everyone, I am trying to move my freelancing consulting services fully online but struggling with choosing the right set of software and tools that allows me to do so. What are good tools to convert consulting business online? I am looking for software/platforms that provide all the necessary toolkits (Website, scheduling, video calls, payments, etc). Please share your experience with those tools and how it has helped transition your business online and the overall performance of your business?

Thank you for your suggestions in advance.

PwC online numerical and logical reasoning tests

Main Post:

PwC UK. They mentioned a preference for completion within five days. Anyone have experience with these? For people who were successful with these, what is the best way to prepare? Thanks.

Top Comment:

PwC should give you practice links to the SHL. Run through some practice tests and take them seriously. Try to figure out the patterns - there are only so many. Good luck!

Ross Online - Consulting Career

Main Post:

Would the online MBA from Ross weigh differently from the FT program if I wanted to apply to a top tier consulting firm?

I just don't know how the recruiting process goes with top consulting firms. When they pour over your application, do nuances like online or in-person matter from a top institution? I have my sights set on firms like BCG, McKinsey, etc.

Top Comment:

Its possible, but its gonna be much, much harder than doing a FT MBA. You'll probably need a GMAT score of 720+ and have a solid job. I couldn't find employer-specific numbers for Michigan's PT or Online MBA, but Booth posts its employment for PT and FT. Booth PT sent 1 person to Bain, 6 to Mckinsey and 2 to BCG (so 9 total to MBB). Booth FT sent 48 to Mckinsey, 35 to BCG and 26 to Bain (109 total to MBB). If you're serious about MBB I would aim for FT

Thoughts on Business School online short courses?

Main Post:

I've been seeing online short courses from business schools that have been popping up recently and thought I'd put it out to the community to see if you have any thoughts on these?

Are they purely for something to stick on the CV or has anyone tried any of these and they're actually useful?

Some examples of what I'm talking about:

They're all a similar price (~£2.5k) and 8 weeks long, self-paced.

Top Comment: Putting that on your resume next to your degrees would be pure cringe. Otherwise, there's no cert, it's too short to be comparable to an MBA and you can learn the same thing with $10 HBR articles. The Oxford one is 'self-paced' so basically an expensive Coursera course with no faculty interaction. I don't see the value. Wait until your employers pays for an executive education program. At least that's a signal your employer invests in you.

Any online courses for consulting?

Main Post:

Has anyone gone through any online courses that you think is helpful for consulting? There's only so much excel learning and powerpoint slide making one can do during the COVID lull period.

I came across Coursera's Pricing Strategy Optimisation course but it seemed too specific and niche?

Any ideas or experiences (good or bad) so far?

Top Comment:

Try the FMVA program of the Corporate Finance Institute. You'll significantly improve your excel and powerpoint skills, which are important in consulting.

Oliver Wyman online application tests

Main Post:

I just took it. Felt more like a time management exercise (30 Qs in 20 minutes for both sections), as the questions were challenging but not too difficult.

If you've taken it (recently or long ago), what was your experience? Any idea what thresholds they're expecting from successful candidates in terms of correct answers? Thanks!

Top Comment:

I just did the tests two days ago. I found the maths part very easy, the critical reasoning test I found a pain in the ass because there is several answers for some question which are all relevant to the answer. No idea what they want in terms of thresholds though.

What software do the large consulting firms use to interact with their clients?

Main Post:

Hi, I'm wondering what large consulting firms use for basic everyday interaction with clients. E.g. document exchange, project management, timekeeping and billing, text and video messaging etc. I could imagine a set of tools that may be used, but i am curious if there is a more integrated solution?

Thanks!

Top Comment:

Email. Even invoices generated through timesheets and billing are generally sent to them via email.

Project management and document management wise (or goes for any real pm task) we tend to work on client site directly so its kind of a non-issue.
